Firefighters ask residents to check fire alarms

Firefighters at the Fire and Rescue NSW Umina station in Trafalgar Ave, Woy Woy, are asking residents to check their smoke alarms.

Last week, they reported they had attended two house fires and three kitchen fires in the previous seven days.

In one case, a smoke alarm alerted neighbours after food was left unattended on a hot stove.

"A quick response and entry to this unattended home in Woy Woy this morning by Umina Fire and Rescue crews stopped this fire from spreading to the rest of the kitchen," they stated in a social media post.

The fire fighters described it as "a lucky escape" and "a reminder to never leave cooking unattended and always have a working smoke alarm".

The station has also recently been given a new telephone number. It is 4337 9740.

"Please call 000 for emergencies."
