Tesch calls for speed camera for Woy Woy Rd
Member for Gosford Ms Liesl Tesch has called for an investigation of the installation of a speed camera at known speeding locations in Woy Woy Rd, following a multi-vehicle accident early on Tuesday, May 20.
Police said a sedan and a light truck collided head-on before an SUV collided with the first two vehicles.
The CareFlight helicopter was asked by NSW Ambulance to attend the accident at 7:30am.
CareFlight's specialist doctor and NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the driver of the sedan, a 45-year-old woman, for lower and upper limb injuries before she was transported by helicopter to Royal North Shore Hospital in a stable condition.
The driver of the truck, a 21-year-old man, was assessed and stabilised on scene by CareFlight's specialist doctor and NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken by road in a stable condition to Royal North Shore Hospital.
The driver of the SUV, a 64-year-old woman, did not report any injuries.
The road was closed for several hours while the road was cleared of debris and fluids.
Ms Tesch said: "I have written to NSW Minister for Regional Roads and Transport, Ms Jenny Aitchison, requesting that Transport for NSW investigate the installation of a speed enforcement camera on Woy Woy Rd.
"I have also requested that this stretch be considered for the ongoing trial of average speed cameras, reinforcing the importance of the need to 'drive to survive' in our community.
"As a regional road under the responsibility of Central Coast Council, I have also written to Council requesting a review of any safety upgrades that may be outstanding.
"While NSW Police regularly patrol this stretch, police simply cannot be in all places at all times.
"Every road user has a role to play in ensuring that each time we use every road across our community, we get home safely.
"No family should ever receive the call that their loved one has been hurt on our roads.
"Working together across every level of our community, we can ensure that everyone gets home to their loved ones safely."
Ms Tesch said she recognised the significant impact of driver behaviour leading to accidents on this winding stretch of road,
She said it was a known black spot and a busy route for those who travelled to Sydney and Newcastle each day.
She said the road had seen significant safety upgrades over the past decade.
These included safety signage, changed speed limits to weather conditions, cats-eyes, road quality improvements and safety barrier upgrades.
Member for Robertson Dr Gordon Reid also called for action last week.
"During periods of wet weather, and due to its design, conditions along Woy Woy Road become unsafe for motorists.
"Last week we saw again why Woy Woy Road is dangerous when these conditions affect the region.
"As an emergency department doctor, I have seen firsthand the impact car accidents have on families and their loved ones.
"My thoughts go to the Walker family during this period, and I hope Danielle's recovery is swift.
"The car accident occurred last Tuesday morning leaving thousands of commuters either stuck in traffic or having to find alternate routes to get to the M1, along Brisbane Water Dr.
"There needs to be a review of measures to improve safety and better enforcement of the law to target poor driver behaviour."
Officers attached to Brisbane Water Police District have started inquiries into the incident.
