Anti-scams forum attracts 150 people

More than 150 people attended the anti-scams forum held at Umina Beach on Wednesday, April 10, by Member for Robertson Dr Gordon Reid and Assistant Federal Treasurer Mr Stephen Jones.

"The forum was an opportunity for people to learn ways to protect themselves from scams, know what to do if they are targeted by a scam, and hear about the steps the government is taking to crackdown on this crime," said Dr Reid.

Dr Reid said that, since the Government's crackdown, by last November, scam losses decreased by over 50 per cent in 12 months.

"The Federal Labor Government is implementing an ambitious anti-scam agenda to combat scams and protect Australians," he said.

"It is more important than ever that the community is alert to scams and are aware of how to protect themselves."

Dr Reid said: "If an offer seems too good to be true, it probably is."

He said people should "stop, think and protect" if they received a suspicious call, text or email.

"Take your time before giving money or personal information.

"Ask yourself if the message or call could be fake.

"Act quickly if something feels wrong."
