Jet ski operator rescued several kilometres offshore

A jet ski operator whose jet ski lost power during a recreational outing off Lion Island on Saturday, July 27, has been rescued several kilometres offshore.

The Saratoga man, in his late 20s, called Marine Rescue Central Coast at its Point Clare base to advise of his difficulties.

He provided latitude and longitude coordinates, which enabled the rescue crew to track him down quickly.

"Even so, the outgoing tide caused the jet ski to drift several kilometres from its original position while Marine Rescue was carrying out the search," said Marine Rescue member Mr Steven Constantine.

"The mission was again made easier by the jet ski owner carrying a torch, which was used to signal the Marine Rescue boat as it approached."

He said that being on a disabled vessel, at the mercy of the tide and wind, in the pitch black of night on the open sea was not a great place to be!

"Whenever you go out on the water, log on with Marine Rescue by using the free app, wear the right clothing and a lifejacket," he said.

He recommended multiple communication methods including mobile phones and VHF radio.

"It's also wise to take a torch and carry flares and other distress signalling equipment if you can," he said.

Marine Rescue towed the disabled jet ski to Davistown.
