Prizes offered for tree-themed competition

An art, photo and poetry competition with a tree theme, run by the Pearl Beach Environment Group for National Tree Day, will have prizes totalling $525.

Prizes of $50 will be offered in each of the three categories for entrants aged eight to 16 years, while prizes of $125 will be offered for entrants aged over 16.

The environment group, which is part of the Pearl Beach Progress Association, will hold the competition in association with the Pearl Beach Arboretum.

"The Pearl Beach community greatly values its mature trees and its bushland setting," said environment group convenor Ms Mary Knaggs.

"An objective of the Pearl Beach Progress Association is to protect and enhance the environment and encourage nature conservation within the village of Pearl Beach.

"Similarly the objectives of the Pearl Beach Arboretum are protect, enhance, maintain and manage the Crommelin Native Arboretum at Pearl Beach and to promote and encourage nature conservation at Pearl Beach and elsewhere."

Ms Knaggs said the prize money would be provided by the environment group.

Among the conditions of entry were that the decision of the selection committee would be final.

If there are no entries in a category worthy of a prize, no prize will be given.

Prize money will only be paid by electronic transfer to a bank account.

The Pearl Beach Progress Association and the Crommelin Native Arboretum will hold joint copyright of the works submitted with the artists or author.

Entries should be emailed, with name, age and contact details to pearlbeachenvironmentgroup@gmail.com before 5pm on Thursday, July 25.

Entrants under 18 years of age will have to supply the name and contact details of a guardian or school teacher.

Ms Knaggs said both the progress association and the Arboretum were non-profit entities and donations were always welcome.

Donations to the Arboretum were tax deductible.
