Exchange student to spend a year in Brazil

Umina Rotary Exchange student Millie Hayes has left for a year in Brazil.

"She will be immersed in Brazilian culture, living with local families, travelling and attending school," said Umina Beach Rotary publicity officer Mr Pat Lewis.

He said she was farewelled at a packed club meeting attended by family and friends, where she gave a speech Portugese, the language of Brazil.

"Millie will be an outstanding representative of her family, our club, Rotary, and Australia."

Mr Lewis said: "For the first time ever, we had at a meeting four Rotary Exchange students: Beau Seale, Dominic Hall, Reese Vergara and Millie Hayes.

"Beau Seale went to Austria in 2019 and Dominic Hall to Slovakia in 2020.

"Reese Vergara has just returned from Denmark from 2024."

The club received a picture of Millie's arrival in Brazil.

"Take a look at the reception committee that greeted her on arrival," said the club's newsletter editor Mr Wayne Dowdle.

The welcome signs included one saying: "This will be the best year of your life."
