Hand tools still skilfully used
Hand woodworking tools are still in use and skilfully used at the Umina Beach Men's Shed, according to Shed secretary Mr Vic Brown.
He said one member, a former builder, wished to join two lengths of timber together.
"To do so he wanted a perfect joint along a good length.
"Did he use an electric planer or sander?
"Not with this craftsman.
"Out with one of our old hand planes."
Mr Brown said he removed the blade, sharpened it on a stone and fitted it back into place.
"He quietly planed the surfaces to a perfect match.
"It was great to witness old skills very alive and well applied."
