Southern lose 3-1 to The Entrance in WPL

Crisp winter air mixed with a beautifully warm sun greeted Southern's Women's Premier League team when they arrived at The Entrance for their Round 12 soccer match.

The match would result in a 3-1 win to The Entrance.

Soon after the game began, Entrance midfielder Lisa Bullivant won a crucial ball in the middle of the park.

A simple miscommunication error allowed The Entrance's Ruby Watt through on goal.

One-on-one with the keeper, Ruby made no mistake, calmly slotting the ball into the net to give the Reddies an early lead.

From there, The Entrance's Lisa Bullivant continued her dominance in the midfield, playing through balls to wingers and their striker almost at will.

Entrance's midfield dominance was made even more domineering by the lack of urgency in Southern's playing.

The second goal came from an unlikely but impressive source.

A massive throw-in from Ruby, the ball soared into the box and was met by the high-flying Darci Caroll, who beat the keeper in the air to double the Reddies' lead.

Just before the halftime whistle, Ruby chased down a loose ball deep in the opposition half.

Surrounded by three defenders, she used her speed and determination to burst free and go one-on-one with the keeper again, coolly finishing to cap off an incredible first half for the Reddies.

The second half started vastly different from the first half.

Southern came out with a willingness to play football and it showed.

With the majority of play in their attacking half, besides a couple of counterattack runs from The Entrance, Southern was looking the team more likely to score.

However, that final strike on goal was alluding them.

When in attack, Ruby continued to trouble the Southern Ettalong backline with her relentless pressing, but the opposing keeper was sharp off her line and denied any further scoring chances.

With 15 minutes to go, a couple of fresher legs gave Southern the boost they needed.

A long ball through had Brooke Hardie chasing hard to beat the keeper to the ball.

A heavy touch in the box saw The Entrance keeper take out Brooke and thus a spot kick was awarded.

Brooke stepped up to score the final goal of the match with just one minute to go.

Match official was Lachlan Harvey.
