Club holds blessing of new canoe

Central Coast Outrigger Canoe Club celebrated the blessing of its new canoe on Saturday, April 29.

This ceremony is a centuries-old Polynesian tradition that is still upheld by outrigging clubs today.

"It reflects their respect of the canoe's value as an integral part of the club's 'Ohana' or family," said club president Ms Jenny Norris.

The ceremony was attended by club members and guests including Mingaletta elder Aunty Robyn Reid and Member for Gosford Ms Liesl Tesch.

Mr Shayne Bennett led the ceremony, explaining the significance of the canoe's name Whaitere and performing traditional Maori prayers (Karakia) for spiritual guidance and protection for all those who travel in her.

"The launch of the canoe and the casting of the wreath into the sea were symbolic gestures that marked the beginning of Whaitere's journey," said Ms Norris.

Club member Mr Gary Machin said: "The new canoe was sleek, stable and fast.

"It is a very light weight canoe, making it easy to pick up and walk it into the water."

Ms Norris said: "Outrigging is a great sport enjoyed all year round.

"The sport helps develop personal fitness and team spirit, while paddlers enjoy access to our unique coastal and inland waterways.

"The club welcomes new members at any time throughout the year and offers free introductory sessions for prospective paddlers to learn about basic paddling techniques and outrigging culture.
