Bags of rubbish removed from mangroves
Eight full bags of litter was removed from the mangroves adjacent to the Woy Woy railway station by a team from Brisbane Waters Secondary College working with the marine clean-up organisation, Clean4Shore.
"Plenty of treated pine decking was also pulled from the mangroves plus a plastic pallet, all building products discarded into the waterway," said Clean4Shore co-ordinator Mr Graham Johnston.
"Across the waterway in Phegans Bay, an old fibreglass tender, full of rubbish, was lifted into the barge by the boys.
"During the trip home, fisherman under the Spike Milligan bridge alerted the barge to two shopping trollies laying in the water.
Both were lifted into the barge.
"Gutter rubbish" in the mangroves in Woy Woy Channel filled another two bags.
"It was a perfect warm day on the water with a great team effort by the students, well-supported by their supporting teachers, with the team enjoying a big healthy lunch.
A total of 640kg of rubbish was offloaded at Woy Woy tip.
